Wisdom Tours was created by Jim and Shelley Hagan out of a life-long passion for Asia that began with our very first journey to the Himalayas in 1973. Our passion is still alive today. For more than a decade, Wisdom Tours has shared these culturally rich travel experiences with great enthusiasm with thousands of travelers.
Every itinerary is carefully customized with a distinctive Wisdom Tours style that immerses our guests in cultures with fascinating people, continual living traditions, and colorful festivals that have remained unchanged for centuries. Jim Hagan is the co-founder of Wisdom Tours and leads our cultural tours to India, Nepal, Bhutan, China, Tibet, Thailand and Cambodia. When he is not traveling, he is teaching at Castleton State College and Johnson State College of Vermont. He leads every tour the way he teaches — with a passion and concern that each traveler has the experience of a lifetime!
Jim has lived, studied, and traveled in Asia for more than 25 years. He has lectured in Europe, Asia, and the U.S. on Buddhist art, culture, meditation, and philosophy. He lived in India and Nepal during the 70’s and 80’s where he studied Tibetan Buddhism at Kopan Monastery, Nepal, The Library of Tibetan Works & Archives in Dharamsala, India and Ganden Monastery, South India. Jim is an accomplished photographer who has exhibited his photos from decades of documenting Buddhist and Hindu art, architecture, and culture.
Shelley Warren is the co-founder and a principal of Wisdom Tours. For more than 30 years she has traversed the globe. She was one of the first tourists on the island of Samos, Greece in the 70’s. With her home base in the Bavarian Alps, she made several overland treks to India traveling with the locals through Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. She has hiked the Himalayas in India and Nepal, studied metal casting in a family run foundry in Patan, Nepal.
Shelley was formally trained as a sculptor at Yale School of Art. She exhibits her work nationally and has taught art to University students for over two decades. On our tours, she combines her passion for travel with her love for the arts.
